We bought a house across the street from our rental. The seller, who owned an adjacent lot, moved onto it in a new house. I came home one day to find her and her husband hanging a downspout from my garage gutter to keep the rain from falling on our unpainted, wooden, shared fence and dripping on their side. She had planted multiple trees and plants on her old property (our new house). After about a year, she decided a tree SHE planted was possibly - possibly? - obstructing her new gardens’ water flow. I came home, just in time, to find her and her son-in-law about to cut down MY tree. She said she planted it so it made it her tree! We “discussed” her request and I ended up telling her I would take legal steps if she attempted to damage or cut the tree. She said it would eventually ruin her garden. I said that we would both be long buried before those roots affected that patch of land. She attempted several times to get my son to cut down the tree. He informed her he was more concerned for my reaction than he was for her garden. She moved out five years later and the new owners filled in her garden. They didn’t request we cut the tree.
