14 Famous Women Who Went Through Trials and Tribulations to Become Mothers

Often it might seem that celebrities have it easy. Even being pregnant doesn’t stop them from walking down the red carpet in high heels. However, in reality, many stars face difficulties on the way to long-awaited motherhood. And by speaking openly about it, they show that there is no shame in the fact that not everything went the way they originally hoped.

Here at CHEERY, we believe that it doesn’t matter how children are born, as long as they are loved by their parents.

Amy Schumer

In 2020, Amy revealed the challenges she faced trying to have a baby. The 37-year-old comedienne resorted to IVF treatment and admitted that it was a very tough experience for her. However, when asked how her life has changed, Amy didn’t hesitate to affirm that it’s become so much more beautiful and that her son is the best thing about it.

Hathaway has shared that she knows “the emotional agony of struggling to have a baby.” Her first pregnancy was not an easy one. The actress had to conquer infertility, and now Anne openly calls for an end to the silence on this subject.

«Each time I was trying to get pregnant and it wasn’t going my way, someone else would manage to conceive. I knew intellectually that it didn’t happen just to torment me, but, to be honest, it felt a little bit like it did.»

Kim Kardashian

Kim’s two pregnancies were not easy. She went through a premature birth, and afterwards surgeons and doctors sternly advised her not to have any more children. But even this didn’t stop the star. Kim used a surrogacy program and became the mother of two more children: daughter Chicago and son Psalm.

Courteney Cox

Our beloved Monica from Friends had her own trials bringing her beautiful baby girl into the world. During the filming of the legendary sitcom, the actress had several unsuccessful pregnancies and then decided to use IVF. After two attempts, her efforts finally paid off. This year, her daughter Coco Arquette turned 18 years old.

«I’m so proud to be your mom. You are courageous, smart, deep, funny, unique and beautiful with the biggest heart. I can’t wait to see what’s next.»

Mariah Carey

The singer’s long-awaited twins were also born thanks to IVF, and she was almost 40 at the time. Prior to the procedure, Mariah had a failed pregnancy and several years of desperate attempts at fertility treatment. Now the singer smiles happily in all the photos she takes with her children and is quick to talk about how much she adores them.

The actress’ first pregnancy went so easily that she and her husband didn’t think there’d be any problems in trying to conceive a second child. She later talked about that in an interview: “We tried and tried and tried and tried to get pregnant; it just wasn’t to be”. The couple even thought about using IVF, but the actress’ age eventually made this impossible. Parker and her husband didn’t give up, though: they used surrogacy and became happy parents to adorable twins.

Elizabeth Banks

Banks also opted to use a surrogacy program, as it turned out she simply couldn’t carry a child. Elisabeth admits that she still feels judged by others for this, but is no longer going to make excuses for it or hide it anymore.

«If my story helps people feel less alone on their journey, then I’m grateful for that.»

The Canadian singer, who was the 14th child in her family, had a long and difficult journey before becoming the mother of three boys: René-Charles, Nelson, and Eddy. In January 2001, after being treated for infertility at a clinic in New York and having two minor surgeries, her first son was born. Nine years later, the 42-year-old singer gave birth to twins after six failed IVF attempts.

Emma Thompson

Thompson’s daughter Gaia was a miracle child: she was conceived with the help of IVF and was born when Emma was almost 40. Attempts to give Gaia a brother or sister were unsuccessful. So, in 2003, Emma and her husband made an unexpected decision: they adopted (although not yet officially) a 16-year-old orphan from Rwanda.

«The important thing, though, is that he is in our life and we are his family, and that’s an absolute truth.»

Gabrielle Union

In addition to acting in films, Gabrielle has written a book in which she talks about the struggle she faced trying to have a child. According to the actress, she had eight or nine unsuccessful pregnancies but finally became a mother in 2018: she and her husband found success with surrogacy.

«For so many women, and not just women in the spotlight, people feel very entitled to know, ‘Do you want kids?’ A lot of people, especially people that have fertility issues, just say ‘no’ because that’s a lot easier than being honest about whatever is actually going on. People mean so well, but they have no idea the harm or frustration it can cause.»

Kristen Wiig

In 2020, the actress gave a candid interview in which she admitted how painful her path to motherhood was. Kristen went through years of unsuccessful IVF attempts and fertility treatments. Eventually, the actress and her husband decided to resort to surrogacy and became parents to baby twins: Shiloh and Luna.

«We’ve been together for about five years, and three of them were spent in an IVF haze. Emotionally, spiritually, and medically, it was probably the most difficult time in my life. I wasn’t myself. There are so many emotions that go with it — you’re always waiting by the phone and getting test results, and it was just bad news after bad news. Occasionally there would be a good month, but then it was just more bad news. There was a lot of stress and heartache.»

Tyra Banks

Tyra also candidly admitted to having had failed IVF treatments time and time again. The star eventually turned to surrogacy and became the mother to her adorable son York.

«There are so many stages. It’s like, ‘Okay, it’s a healthy embryo. Okay, it’s month one.’ I was just constantly living on edge until I held him for the first time.»

Ellen Pompeo

The star of Grey’s Anatomy is a mother to two children who were born via surrogacy. Having gone through this experience, Ellen shared her awe of those who are able bring a new life into this world.

«This is an incredible thing to do with your life, to give the gift of carrying someone’s child. I am forever grateful and feel very blessed and grateful to her — she who will remain anonymous.»

Khloe Kardashian

In order to have a second child, Chloe went through a series of trials. There were failed IVF treatments, and doctors told her that any subsequent pregnancy was highly likely to end in a miscarriage. The star even admitted that the thought of not being able to carry another child broke her heart. In the end, Chloe decided to use a surrogate and is now awaiting the arrival of another adorable baby.

What do you think does a family have to contain children for it to be complete? Or can two be happy alone?
