Zoë Saldana and Marco Perego met in 2013. At the time, Zoë was already a famous actress. She had starred in James Cameron’s Avatar as well as in Star Trek and some other famous movies.

And Marco was building a successful career as an artist. His works were exhibited at the Galerie Gmurzynska in Zurich, the Royal Arts Academy in London, Art Basel, and the Museo Tuscolano in Rome. In 2008, he painted the background for Dolce & Gabbana’s “Where Fashion Meets Art” campaign.

Zoë immediately realized it was love at first sight.

Before Zoë and Marco met in person, she was familiar with his paintings. She had been interested in his work for 5 years, and by the time they met in New York in 2013, she’d known Marco through his creations.

According to Zoë, she immediately realized he was the love of her life. Shortly after, they began to date, and in June 2013, they got married. This happened 3 weeks after Marco proposed to Zoë. Really, why wait if you are sure about your feelings?

“I don’t do the ABCs. I do what my heart says, what my heart feels. So from the moment I met my husband, we were together. We knew.”

The couple kept their marriage secret for a few months.

Even though the couple got married in June 2013, their fans learned about their wedding only in September. They were photographed by paparazzi, and their wedding bands could be seen in one of the photos.

However, the fans were not even aware that Saldana and Perego were dating. There were some rumors, but that was it. In April 2013, the couple was seen kissing at the premiere of Saldana’s movie Star Trek Into Darkness. That was when people started suspecting they had an affair.

Marco adopted his wife’s surname and became Perego Saldana.

After the wedding, the wife took her husband’s surname and became Zoë Saldana-Perego. But actually, her husband did the same. He decided to break stereotypes and adopted his wife’s surname, thus becoming Marco Perego Saldana.

At first, Zoë tried to talk her husband out of it by saying that his fellow artists and the community of men wouldn’t understand him. But Marco just smiled and said that he didn’t care.

Marco’s move caused a heated debate on social media. Many people mentioned that men tend to refuse to take their wives’ surnames because they’re afraid their legacy will disappear with it. Eventually, the couple put out a joint statement and encouraged men to redefine masculinity and be open to changes.

“Men, you will not cease to exist by taking your partner’s surname. On the contrary—you’ll be remembered as a man who stood by change. I know our sons will respect and admire their father more because their father leads by example.”

Zoë and Marco welcomed twins, Cy and Bowie, in November 2014, and son, Zen, in February 2017. Just like their father, the children are Perego Saldana. The couple agreed to raise their sons in a gender-neutral environment to break the stereotypes of men’s or women’s social roles.

Zoë and Marco buy toys intended for both girls and boys. They also try to be role models for their children and do things that are usually assigned to the opposite gender. For example, Zoë can fix broken things, while Marco can cook dinner.

Marco is Zoë’s biggest fan.

Marco is not very active on social media, but he never misses a chance to praise his wife. And he talks not only about Zoë’s professional achievements. Marco supports her in her humanitarian efforts, especially during the #MeToo movement by having conversations with her about how men can make positive changes in gender equality.

“I have the most perfect partner in my life. I’ve never met a male like my husband, who believes any woman is naturally his equal.”
