12 Things That Are Easy to Confuse if You Don’t Know the Little Details

If you have confused bilberry with blueberry, tortillas with wraps, and sherbet with sorbet, you’re not alone. It’s the same for Antarctica and the Antarctic. In this article, we’re going to talk about these and some other things people often confuse.

1. Meatballs and frikadellers

Meatballs are balls of minced meat, mixed with other ingredients. For example, with onion, butter, eggs, and spices. They are baked, fried, or stewed in a sauce — cream, tomato, and others.

Frikadellers is a German version of meatballs, and in some countries (for example, Denmark), it’s a national dish. They are made from minced meat with onion, milk, eggs, and breading. Then, they are turned into flattened balls and fried in a pan. They look like flatter meatballs.

2. Bilberry and blueberry

Bilberry and blueberry are closely related. The former is from Europe and the latter is from North America. They look a bit different:

  • Bilberry is darker than blueberry. Bilberry is dark purple, and blueberry is blue with a white plaque, looking like dust.
  • Bilberry has blue-purple pulp, and blueberry has white, yellow, or light-green pulp.
  • Blueberry is bigger. It varies from 5 to 13 mm in size, and bilberry is from 3 to 10 mm.

3. Antarctica and Antarctic

Antarctica is the southernmost and least-populated continent. It’s surrounded by the Southern Ocean on all sides, and it contains the geographic South Pole.

Antarctic is bigger than Antarctica. It is a polar region around Earth’s South Pole. It includes the continent of Antarctica, the Kerguelen Plateau, and other island territories located on the Antarctic Plate or south of the Antarctic Convergence.

4. Melanin and melatonin

Melanin is a group of pigments, produced and built up in the skin when it’s exposed to the sun. As a result, the skin gets tanned in order to protect itself from too much UV light. And melatonin is a hormone, produced when we’re asleep, helping us maintain a normal sleeping schedule.

5. Sauce and dressing

sauce is a liquid, cream, or semi-solid food, served on or used in preparing other foods. It can be served separately (ketchup, guacamole, salsa) or be one of the ingredients (bolognese, bechamel, pesto).

dressing is a sauce for salads. Examples are caesar, ranch, thousand island, blue cheese, and balsamic vinaigrette.

6. Tortilla and wrap

Tortilla and wrap are flatbreads used to make dishes with fillings. Tortilla is a thin unleavened flatbread from Mexico, made from corn flour and wheat flour. It’s used for tacos, quesadillas, enchiladas and other national dishes.

Wrap is like a tortilla, but it’s often bigger and includes yeast. It makes the wrap more voluminous and tasty. Besides, you can make a lot of different dishes with a wrap, not only Mexican ones.

7. Hurricane and typhoon

Hurricanes and typhoons are tropical cyclones, which are large masses of air, formed above the ocean. This mass rotates around the middle with low atmospheric pressure inside and can reach the speed of 73, or more, miles per hour.

Hurricanes are tropical cyclones in the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, and the central northern, and eastern Pacific Ocean. And if such a cyclone appears in the western and northwestern Pacific Ocean and the northern Indian Ocean, it’s called a typhoon.

8. Buttermilk and cream

Both buttermilk and cream are made from milk. To make buttermilk, milk is fermented, and to make a cream, we need to remove the fat from milk. But the products are still different in terms of taste and texture. Buttermilk is more like sour yogurt, and cream is sweet.

Buttermilk can be a drink, or it can be used in cooking pastry, sauces, dressings, and marinades. Cream is also used for pastry, and added to soups and sauces.

9. Sherbet and sorbet

Sherbet is a frozen dessert made from a mix of fruit mash or juice, sweeteners, and a little bit of milk or buttermilk. It has a low-fat concentration (1-2%), a light structure, and a creamy taste.

Sorbet is also a frozen dessert made from a mix of fruit mash or juice with sweeteners. But unlike sherbet, it doesn’t contain any dairy products, so the taste is very fruity.

10. Grill and barbecue

Grill is the fastest way of cooking food, which is cut into small pieces and fried right on top of the fire. The temperature is 500–550 F. Meat, seafood, vegetables, and even fruit are cooked this way.

In barbecues, the food is further from the fire. It might be cooked for several hours, up to an entire day, at 225 F or lower. Tough meat is cooked this way to make it softer and more tender.

11. Yoga and pilates

Yoga is an ancient spiritual practice rooted in India. As a fitness strategy, it blends physical poses (asanas) with breathing techniques (pranayama). Yoga helps relieve neck and lower back pains, improve balance, and deal with stress and sleep problems.

In pilates, unlike yoga, you don’t have to stay in a position for a long time. In this practice, you should take a position and then move your arms and legs. As a result, you can improve the power and agility of your body, straighten your back, and relieve backaches.

12. Terrace and veranda

Terraces and verandas are parts of the house and other buildings. A terrace is an external, raised, open, flat area in either a landscape near a building or as a roof terrace on a flat roof. This is why terraces are often next to parks or gardens. A veranda is a roofed gallery or porch. Unlike a terrace, a veranda is often partly enclosed by a railing and frequently extends across the front and sides of the structure.
