18 Celebrities Who Used to Be Roommates Before Making It in Hollywood

Living with someone else might be challenging, but it can also lead to life-long friendships and many shared memories. Some celebrities decided to move in together when they were still struggling to make it big. And many of these former roommates stayed close friends even after they became successful.

1. Brad Pitt and Jason Priestley

Brad and Jason moved in together to save on expenses when they were at the start of their careers. They even used to compete to see who could go longer without shaving and showering. And Brad Pitt always won, until he had to clean up to go to auditions.

2. Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling

While playing a married couple in Blue Valentine, the directors of the movie asked them to move in together for a week. Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling loved living together so much that they ended up staying in the same place for a month. They’re still good friends today.

3. Jamie Dornan, Andrew Garfield, and Eddie Redmayne

The trio were roommates when they were all just a bunch of struggling actors. In fact, they used to sit around talking about the rejections they received.

4. Ed Westwick and Chace Crawford

Ed and Chace moved in together in the early days of Gossip Girl, sharing an apartment in New York City. Ed Westwick had never lived far from his hometown before that, so being roommates with his friend and co-star helped him adapt better.

5. Raven-Symoné and Lindsay Lohan

Although Raven and Lindsay lived together for a short period, the 2 didn’t see each other a lot. Lindsay Lohan only spent a few days in their shared flat, but she paid rent and stored her clothes there.

6. Holly Hunter and Frances McDormand

Holly and Frances became roommates by chance as they were placed together while studying drama at Yale University. But eventually they hit it off so well that they decided to live together even after graduating from college.

7. Penn Badgley and Milo Ventimiglia

Penn and Milo were co-stars on The Bedford Diaries and, during the filming of the show, they decided to move in together. Penn Badgley was even approached by Ed Westwick and Chace Crawford because they were looking for a third roommate, but he decided to stay with Milo instead.

8. Dianna Agron and Lea Michele

The 2 women played frenemies on Glee, but at the end of the day, they went home together to their shared apartment. They even shared a passion for cooking and often used to bake vegan cookies together.

9. Brian Atwood and Melissa McCarthy

Brian and Melissa are great friends to this day. Brian said he knew Melissa was going to be a star, so he told her to move to New York and into his flat.

10. Robert Downey Jr. and Kiefer Sutherland

Robert and Kiefer ended up living together for 3 years after they met on the set of the movie 1969. Kiefer even comforted Robert Downey Jr. when he was going through a rough patch with then-girlfriend Sarah Jessica Parker.

11. Nikki Reed and Kristen Stewart

These 2 actresses moved in together while they were filming Twilight. And they spent a great deal of their time together because Nikki Reed has said that neither of them went out very much.

12. Jude Law and Ewan McGregor

Jude and Ewan were roommates quite literally, as they shared the same room and a bunk bed in the ’90s in London. They would later go on to co-found a film and theater company together.

13. Winona Ryder and Gwyneth Paltrow

Although they are not very close at the moment, Gwyneth and Winona used to be best friends and even shared an apartment.

14. Lauren Graham and Connie Britton

The 2 actresses lived together in an empty house for a while. And they’ve remained good friends ever since.

15. Nina Dobrev and Sara Canning

Nina and Sara shared everything as roommates and supported each other when they were at the start of their careers.

16. Madelaine Petsch and Lili Reinhart

These 2 actresses are co-stars on Riverdale and a few years ago they were also roommates for a while. Lili even tweeted in 2017 that she misses being roommates with Madelaine.

Longtime pals Michael Douglas and Danny DeVito first met as acting students in 1960s New York City, then moved in together two years later. “Michael did the laundry,” DeVito said in 2008. “Did he tell you I was a slob?” Douglas chimed in. “Danny was sloppy. No, really, he was a great roommate. It was a magical time. We were getting paid to act!” While their respective acting careers turned out to be quite different, the two actors had each other’s backs.

18. Holly Hunter and Frances McDormand

Before they moved in together, Holly Hunter and Frances McDormand were living with their then-boyfriends in New York City. “The four of us hit it off, and we all moved to the North Bronx,” Hunter explained. “We got two apartments, one for each couple. Then we broke up with our boyfriends, and Fran moved in with me.” Hunter had nothing but positive things to say about her time living with McDormand. “Fran’s as fabulous as she seems. We had a blast,” she summed up.
