How Lady Gaga Learned to Love Herself Without Makeup, Embracing Imperfect Skin and Dark Circles Under Her Eyes

Lady Gaga knows practically everything about success and recognition. She has won dozens of awards, made the list of the world’s most influential people twice, and has become a timeless style icon. The star has also founded a charity, which supports mental health in young people. Nonetheless, she herself had to walk a long road to finally learn to love herself and to realize that she can show the world her natural, non-stage persona.

In 2008, Lady Gaga burst onto the music scene with videos of her songs all over the music channels, and it was immediately clear: the girl’s got style, and it’s unique! She wore unbelievable heels, flesh-colored dresses and literally painted a new persona on her face with her makeup. Critics thought it was tasteless, while fans cheered her on.

And then, over a decade ago, the singer made it clear with her appearances, that being different is not a bad thing, and that we should love and accept ourselves for who we are and what we like. Regardless of what people say.

Quite recently, in 2019, Lady Gaga admitted that it was makeup that gave her strength and confidence. The star said she felt like a true superhero with it on, and noted that a new look can change the way you feel — even when, in the process, your own true image is completely obscured.

Yes, the celeb knows first-hand about insecurity: she’s been haunted by it since she was a child.

“I never felt beautiful, and I still have days that I don’t feel beautiful. All of the insecurities that I’ve dealt with my whole life from being bullied when I was younger, they come right back up to bite me.”

And yet, Lady Gaga took the risk of making a completely different appearance in front of millions. For a large part of the film A Star Is Born, she didn’t wear makeup, revealing her natural, and equally beautiful, self.

Her on-screen colleague and director Bradley Cooper even asked her to audition with a completely “naked” face, so he could see her “totally open” and “without any artificial tricks.”

“It put me right in the place I needed to be because when my character talks about how ugly she feels — that was real. I’m so insecure. I like to preach, but I don’t always practice what I preach.”

From then on, the star has not been afraid to show off her natural beauty. Yes, she still loves makeup and has even launched her own line of unisex cosmetics. But at the same time, she openly declares that it doesn’t matter if a person wears makeup or not.

“Staying true to myself is part of how I love myself. In truth, we don’t care if you wear our makeup or not. What’s important to us is that you love yourself and spread that kind message around the world.”

It’s precisely self-love that the singer and actress is so eager to spread. On her social media pages, she now often fearlessly posts videos of herself before putting on makeup with dark circles under her eyes and an imperfect skin tone.

Though there have been those who were unhappy with Gaga’s decision. Many commentators indignantly declared that the star should not show herself without makeup.

However, Lady Gaga is a tough nut to crack and has no intention of veering off her path. Despite the fact that makeup has become a comfort and support on a difficult life path, where she was even bullied, she doesn’t want others to hide from the world with the help of cosmetics. Instead, she simply promotes being different and expressing yourself exactly as you like.

“I don’t want people to have a feeling of control actually at all. I want people to feel completely liberated by cosmetics, to do whatever they want with it. Whether they wear a ton of it, buy it — or don’t. I just want them to love the message. It’s like just being excited that there’s a party going on down the street where everybody’s invited.”

What do you think of Lady Gaga’s various colorful appearances? Do you like them, or do you prefer her natural beauty?
