Tom Hiddleston and Chris Hemsworth Played Brothers in Movies So Well That Now They Call Each Other Brothers in Real Life

Even though Tom Hiddleston and Chris Hemsworth play the always competitive brothers Loki and Thor on the screen, outside the set, they are friends that support each other all the time. The mutual affection they’ve had since the first moment they met has become so strong over the years that now Chris and Tom really consider each other brothers.

They met before the first Thor movie.

Tom and Chris first met in 2009 in Kenneth Branagh’s (the director) house, where they read the script for the upcoming Thor film. To understand the characters better, Kenneth suggested that one of the actors wore a green jacket (like Loki’s cape) and the other one wore a red one (like Thor’s). This moment was captured and shared on the 10th anniversary of the film’s release. In 2021, Hiddleston said in an interview that once he saw Chris, he thought, “Oh, they cast the right actor.”

They instantly became friends and loved working together.

The actors liked each other right off the bat. Besides, they had a lot in common: they came into the industry around the same time and were very enthusiastic about Marvel Comics. As a result, during the premiere of Thor in 2011, they behaved as if they’d known each other for ages.

“I made a very fast and firm friendship [with Hemsworth] because we were playing brothers in this enormous thing, and it felt like we were brothers by the end in some way.”

Later, the actors appeared on the same set many times and enjoyed traveling together for different press events and conferences. And during the Wizard World Comic-Con in Philadelphia in 2016, Chris and Tom were so interested in talking to each other that it was hard not to see their strong friendship.

They visited a children’s hospital together.

Despite their tight working schedules, they still make time for good deeds. So, on August 23rd, 2016, when they were working in Australia, Chris and Tom visited a Queensland Children’s Hospital dressed as their Marvel characters. Hemsworth had his hammer with him, and Hiddleston shared a photo on Instagram posing with kids. Tom commented, “Unforgettable meeting all the children. Real heroes.”

They joke at each other from time to time.

Once, Chris and his Marvel universe colleague Idris Elba decided to fool around. Their friend Tom was accepting the TV Choice Awards for The Night Manager. Unfortunately, the actor couldn’t attend the ceremony, so he recorded a video of his acceptance speech. And then, Hemsworth appeared in the frame and joked that it wasn’t Tom’s award, but it was his for an Australian soap opera called Home and Away he had done a long time ago.

“Oh, this is for us, hey? That’s for Home and Away, yeah?... All the work I did on. Thanks everyone at Channel 7, I loved working on Home and Away.”

Idris joined in on the fun and asked them, “How come Luther didn’t get nominated?”

They support each other and love... cuddles.

Chris once said that the cast of Thor is very friendly, and they cuddle a lot. Considering the number of trips by plane and the lack of space there, sometimes, there’s nothing you can do but sleep together and cuddle. Their colleague Mark Ruffalo captured one of such moments, and he also wanted to join this bromance.

Aside from physical support, Chris and Tom support each other spiritually. So, in 2015, Chris had 2 important events: he hosted Saturday Night Live and joined Twitter. Hiddleston quickly twitted, “My goodness. My brother from another mother. Ladies and gentlemen: @chrishemsworth.” And 2 years before that, Chris called himself Hiddlestoner and said he was Tom’s biggest fan.

They miss the time they worked together.

Even though Avengers: Infinity War was the last film Tom and Chris were together in, the latter appeared in a small role in the Loki series. And when in June 2021, he was asked whether Tom would have a small part in the new Thor film, Chris said that he wouldn’t, even though everyone loved Tom very much.

“He was the only other person who understood what the experience had been like. He was the only other person who — when I came back and friends were like, ’How was it?’ — it’s always really hard to explain, and there was one person who knew, and that’s Chris. We’ve always shared that, really, because it’s kind of a life-changing moment for both of us.”

Many people have a good relationship with their co-workers, but Tom and Chris have a true friendship. Even though they played brothers that weren’t friendly to each other, in real life, they became so close that they seem to be each other’s best friends.
