16 Actors Who Had a Hard Time Playing Their Most Famous Characters

Red carpet events, huge earnings, fame... It seems that internationally famous actors and actresses have it all. But many of them had to work really hard and make a great effort to rise to fame. So, after playing their most famous roles, they don’t always remember them with warmth.

At CHEERY, we decided to find out which celebrities had a hard time playing their roles because of the uncomfortable costumes and makeup they had to wear.

Nicola Coughlan

Despite the fact that all women’s outfits in the Bridgerton series were long and covered the shoes, the actresses still had to wear heels. Nicola revealed that she suffered more than the others because of her petite stature — 5 feet 1 inch. She fell thrice on the very first day of filming and even ended up injuring another actress — Claudia Jessie.

Tom Hiddleston

Tom Hiddleston, who played Loki in The Avengers, said that he couldn’t even imagine the horns he had to wear on his head would be so uncomfortable. They were really heavy, and on top of that they covered up his ears, making it hard for him to hear. Also, he felt a little claustrophobic several times while wearing them.

Maisie Williams

When Maisie landed the role of Arya Stark in Game of Thrones, she was still a child. But the series was filmed from 2011 to 2019, and by the end of it, Williams was already a grown-up woman, which contradicted her character.

Maisie confessed that the makeup artists had to hide her feminine features for a few months. They even strapped down her breasts to make her look like a boy.

Tom Felton

Tom Felton had to dye his hair every 10 days during filming so that it remained platinum blonde, without showing any outgrown roots. Later, the actor confessed that it was a great challenge for him. In addition, he wasn’t allowed to get a tan. He had to constantly hide from the sun and apply sunscreen to his skin.

Miley Cyrus

East News

The role of Hannah Montana, which made Miley Cyrus famous, caused significant damage to her psychological health. While millions of girls admired her movie character, the actress was going through difficult times. After all, the costume designers and makeup artists made her look too beautiful on the set and she had to act according to the script.

But when she was off the set, she didn’t know who she was and why she had to meet some social standards. And this was probably one of the main reasons why Miley experimented with her looks so radically when she became an adult.

Kit Harington

Jon Snow is one of the most popular characters in the series Game of Thrones. In an interview, Kit Harington, who played this role, revealed that he got really tired of the clothes he had to wear. According to him, Jon Snow’s fur cape weighed a ton and, on top of that, smelled awful. Kit even jokingly suggested that the series costume designer hated actors because she added weight to his cape every year.

Matthew Lewis

Matthew Lewis had a hard time acting in the Harry Potter film series. Although many people admired the way the actor changed and slimmed down when he became an adult, it turns out that he had to wear a fat suit and false teeth to stay in character during the filming. But he was a teenager at the time and was embarrassed by his looks because there were girls on the set.

Patrick Stewart

When the first season of the Star Trek: The Next Generation series was filmed, Patrick Stewart’s recognizable costume was made very tight. The costume was so small it put too much strain on the actor’s neck, shoulders, and back. Eventually, the actor threatened to sue the studio if they refused to replace it.

Sarah Jessica Parker

Sarah Jessica Parker’s most famous role is Carrie Bradshaw, of course. But it turns out, that it brought her not only fame but also some unpleasant moments. In 2001, in the middle of Sex and the City season 4, her character gets a short, choppy bob to show Carrie going through a metamorphosis after her split with Aidan. Sarah confessed that she hated this hairstyle and joked that she wants to forget it for good.

Orlando Bloom

Orlando Bloom also had to suffer during filming. The fact is that his natural eye color is brown, so he had to constantly wear blue-colored contact lenses in order to play elf Legolas. However, these contacts damaged his eyes so badly, that he could wear them only for a short period of time.

Tom Holland

Tom Holland also had to suffer from the tightness of his superhero suit. On top of that, the suit was a single piece without a removable mask, so the actor couldn’t even drink water in it properly. Tom also had to wear special underwear, and in order to use the bathroom, he had to remove the suit entirely.

Ralph Fiennes

Ralph Fiennes, who portrayed Voldemort, hated his makeup, eyebrow pads, and false teeth. He also said that, in the future, he would never again accept a role that required so heavy makeup. He still gets shivers every time he thinks about makeup artists so close to his face with a brush or a sponge, or a pair of scissors.

Benedict Cumberbatch

Benedict Cumberbatch had a hard time playing in the Sherlock series. It turns out that his ordinary-looking suits and coats were very tight. Sometimes the actor couldn’t even breathe or digest properly in them. The actor also revealed that before landing the role in the series, one of his friends gave him a coat that happened to be similar to the one in Sherlock’s, and now the actor can’t wear it out in public.

Robin Williams

Though many actors have to hit the weights and seriously pack on muscle to play physically strong characters, that was never the case for Robin Williams when he portrayed Popeye because he got ready-made muscles. But this didn’t help him much.

The prosthetic arms he had to wear would cut off the circulation in his arms, so filming had to be completely halted every 30 minutes until he could get the blood flowing around his arms again.

Anne Hathaway

Hathaway, who portrayed Catwoman, wasn’t quite happy with her character’s costume either. She even called it a “psychological terrorist” because she couldn’t stop thinking about how she would fit into that suit for a year. She even had to go to the gym for 10 months.

Kate Winslet

When Kate Winslet was doing Titanic, it wasn’t only hard for her because of the exhausting process itself, but also because of the clothes. The actress told a story of how she almost drowned because of her coat.

It happened when in one of the scenes, she and DiCaprio were hit by a wave of water. Kate was supposed to swim to the surface, but her coat got stuck on an iron bar. Winslet was really tired, so she was scared, and she thought she would drown. But fortunately, the crew helped her swim to the surface.
