I Gave Myself Anti-Aging Face Massage for a Month, and Here’s How It Changed the Condition of My Skin

Hi! My name is Mila, I’m 31 years old, and I already have small, barely noticeable wrinkles on my forehead. There are 2 coming up in my smile area. I’m against beauty injections, and I think those beauty procedures are supposed to be pleasant and bring comfort. So, I decided to give myself a face massage that is supposed to slow down skin aging and give me 5 minutes of relaxation.

How face massage is performed.

Face massage can be done by a professional cosmetologist or by yourself. The most popular techniques include soft stimulation of certain spots on the face, neck, and shoulders. It’s supposed to relax facial muscles, make your skin healthy, and help you look and feel better.

All you need is your hand and something to decrease the friction. For example, cosmetic oil or lotion. I chose a moisturizing cream. I have combination and sensitive skin, so I didn’t want to use cosmetic oil, because it might clog the pores or cause an allergic reaction.

I did a massage every night after removing makeup and washing my face. I chose this time for a reason. In the morning, my face looks fresh, and by the evening, it gets tired, so I wanted to freshen it up a little.

How much massage really helps with anti-aging.

In the short-term, face massage can relax the tense muscles, improve blood circulation, lift the skin and make it look healthier. It seems that if you make the massage your daily habit, the effect might last while you do it. Of course, the massage won’t remove the obvious aging signs, but it helps keep the skin toned and in better condition.

To feel the effect, I did massage 5 minutes a day. A study about the blood circulation in the skin after the procedure said that 5 minutes is the optimal time. Besides, I felt that 1-2 minutes is too little, and 10 minutes is too much. The most important thing is not to lose motivation.

How to do face massage yourself properly.

Step 1. Pour a small amount of oil or lotion into your hands and rub them against each other to make them warm. Put the product on the face and neck evenly in light ascending movements.

Step 2. Start with your neck. Carefully move the fingers up from the clavicles to the jaw.

Step 3. Lightly pinch the center of the chin with your thumb and index finger.

Step 4. Move the fingers to the edges of the chin, pressing them with light-but-firm pressure outward and upward, gliding over the jawbone toward the ears.

Step 5. With circular movements, massage the area under the earlobes.

Step 6. Place your fingers to the nose wings and move the fingers upward and outward over the cheekbones.

Step 7. Press under the cheekbones, and go from the center to the temples.

Step 8. Massage the temples in circular movements.

Step 9. Place the tips of the fingers between the brows and slide them outward across the brow bone toward the temples. Do the same underneath the eyes.

Step 10. Go back to the eyebrows, and this time move vertically, sweeping the fingers from the brows up toward the hairline.

Step 11. With your fingertips, massage the sides of the face, going from the chin to the forehead and then back.

Step 12. Smooth it all back down the neck and finish with some neck stretches.

What changed after 1 month.

I did the massage every night for a month. During the first several days, I didn’t notice any effect, but a slight relaxation of the muscles. By the end of week 1, it became more obvious. I spend almost the entire day in front of the computer. If I forget to take breaks, by the end of the day, I have a headache, especially near my temples. The massage helped relax this area, and I noticed that I had headaches way less often.

By the end of week 3, I noticed a different effect — thanks to better blood circulation, the color of my face became healthier. Some healthy blush appeared on the cheeks and forehead, and the skin looked lifted.

Finally, I thought my beauty products started to work better. Several times, I used a serum with hyaluronic acid instead of cream for the massage. And I felt that it got absorbed better.

At the same time, the massage had zero effect on the nasolabial folds and puffiness around the eyes. It might have an effect if you do the massage for a longer time, which is what I’m planning to do. I liked the fact that my face color became healthier and I had fewer headaches. It’s more than enough for me to make this massage an everyday habit.
