10+ Celebrities Who Are Happy Raising LGBTQ+ Children

Queer children realize that they are different from others rather early in life. According to a study, 1% of 9- and 10-year-old kids self-identify as gay, bisexual, or transgender. In this situation, it is especially important for the parents to be understanding and attentive to their children. Luckily, we see more and more celebrities setting the example of acceptance and unconditional love.

We at CHEERY are happy to share 10 celebrity parents with you who are proudly raising LGBTQ+ kids.

Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron adopted her daughter Jackson in 2012 and first introduced her to the world as a boy. However, in her interview in 2019, the actress revealed that Jackson was a transgender girl. Charlize Theron, whose main priority is the well-being of Jackson and her sister August, has stressed the importance of using the correct pronouns: referring to her as male hurts her daughter’s feelings.

Cynthia Nixon

Cynthia Nixon revealed that her eldest child came out as transgender in 2018 via an Instagram post in which she writes that she’s proud of her son Seph. The actress then mentioned in an interview that she was surprised by the public reaction, or the lack of thereof, to be exact: people were supportive, “but generally it was not a big deal.”

Cher

Cher, who is well-known for supporting the LGBTQ+ community, confessed that when her own child told her about the decision to transition, it wasn’t easy for the singer to deal with. Cher’s trans son Chaz completed the process in 2010, and even though his mother struggled at first, he never doubted her love for him.

Alec Baldwin

The daughter of Alec Baldwin and his ex-wife Kim Basinger, Ireland, was in a relationship with rapper Angel Haze. Even though the couple is no longer together, this has taught Alec to be more open-minded: he shared that Ireland told him about being attracted to a particular person for what they are, no matter the gender.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt

In 2008, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s eldest biological child Shiloh, who was assigned female at birth, asked them to be called John. The former couple’s child “likes to wear boys’ everything,” according to the actress, and the celebrity parents respect this choice, setting a good example for all moms and dads out there.

Sting

Eliot Sumner, the child of Sting, and his wife, Trudie Styler, was assigned female at birth. However, she doesn’t identify with just one particular gender: she believes that these labels aren’t necessary. When asked about gender, Eliot simply described herself as a “musician.”

Billy Ray Cyrus

Billy Ray Cyrus’ daughter and former Disney Channel star, Miley Cyrus, came out as pansexual in 2015. She admitted that she wasn’t sure about her sexuality growing up: she “never related to loving being a girl.” Even before her parents knew, Miley was confident they’d understand her, which is not surprising: Billy Ray Cyrus is an LGBT supporter, and as such, he’s spoken against discriminatory laws.

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett

The daughter of this Hollywood couple, Willow Smith, recently came out as bisexual and also mentioned that she likes the idea of being in a polyamorous relationship. This happened during an episode of Table Talk. Willow’s mother said that she’s fine with that as long as her daughter is happy.

Sia

Sia adopted 2 sons in 2019 who were both 18 at that time and were aging out of the foster system. One of her sons has come out as gay, according to the singer. Sia never mentions his name to protect his identity. A bit later, in 2020, she announced that she’s now a grandmother, as her younger son became a dad of 2.

Johnny Depp

In 2015, the daughter of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis, Lily-Rose Depp, who was 16 at that time, participated in The Self Evident Truths project. This campaign aims to promote sexual fluidity—it is for those who identify as anything that is not 100% heterosexual. The celebrity dad has also worn a “We Are You” t-shirt from The Self Evident Truths to support Lily-Rose.

Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez recently received a lot of praise from her fans online after she introduced one of her children, 14-year-old Emme, using gender neutral pronouns at the concert on June, 2022. JLo said, “The last time we performed together was in a big stadium like this and I ask them to sing with me all the time, and they won’t. So this is a very special occasion.”
