How “Sex and the City” Star Kristin Davis Decided to Become a Mom to 2 African American Children

Many people know Kristin Davis as Charlotte from Sex and the City. However, unlike her character, the actress has never been obsessed with the idea of getting married. Instead, she has dedicated herself to her work and traveling the world as a High Profile Supporter of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. And at 40 years of age, she finally let herself have some rest — she built a beautiful house and found happiness there together with her children.

At CHEERY, we were delighted by the actress’s life story which turned out to be much more complicated than the one of her legendary character.

Kristin Davis’s life is nothing like the life of her iconic Sex and the City character, Charlotte. The actress has never been married, even though she’s been in a relationship with a few famous men, such as Rick Fox, Damian Lewis, and Steve Martin.

In 2011, Davis went to Tanzania and was shocked the see the problems of the local people. She couldn’t even imagine in what conditions millions of people all over the world had to live in and what difficulties they have to overcome every day. At that time, Davis decided, “I have to help.”

For all these years, the actress has been to many African countries meeting people in need there. She’s given public speeches, written articles, and made documentaries. Her Instagram has also become her communication tool through which Davis speaks about the things important to her.

During her trips to Africa, Davis met numerous families, and she realized that she wanted to have a family of her own. But she didn’t like the idea of becoming one of those mothers whose children are raised by nannies. According to the actress, her Sex and the City co-stars, Sarah Jessica Parker and Cynthia Nixon became great role models of caring moms for her.

“I have friends who have adopted, and because my character adopts in the film — I’ve learned a lot, and I think it’s a beautiful, wonderful thing to do, but I want to make sure that I’m ready before I do it,” the actress said in an interview.

“I still felt like there was a child out there that I needed to find that was my child... I can’t explain it. It was a spiritual kind of thing,” this is what she was thinking when she returned home. Davis reached out to an adoption agency to begin the process but kept it in secret. And only when the process of adoption was finalized, did she reveal her little daughter to the world. It happened in 2011.

Interestingly, the actress gave her daughter the same name as Charlotte did in the series — Gemma Rose. However, Davis says that this wasn’t done on purpose, “I had totally forgotten that on Sex and the City I also had a child named Rose and since I did this whole thing in secret, I didn’t talk to anybody about the naming or the adopting at all and I didn’t realize the connection.”

When Gemma Rose turned 5, she told her mom she wanted a little brother. The actress reached out to the same adoption agency again, and in 2018, she welcomed her son, Wilson. When she saw him for the first time, Davis realized that it was her child. “And so one day there he was. I tell you my daughter didn’t bat an eye. She was like, ‘There he is.’”

“The greatest luxury”

Maternity has changed her. She’s stopped working 24/7 and her work is no longer the center of her universe. Now she has focused all her energy on Gemma and Wilson. “The greatest luxury is being home in the morning when my daughter wakes up and not having to go anywhere,” Davis said in an interview. Now she is seeking stability because the well-being of her children depends on her.

Since her children are African American, Davis didn’t want them to lose their roots and even took classes about Black culture. For example, she learned to style Gemma’s curly hair.

“Because my children are African American, I feel like it’s my duty and my job to do as much research, as much work, build as many bridges as possible because you are their community,” Davis said during an interview with Jada Pinkett Smith. According to the star, adoptive parents should learn the culture and traditions of their children’s people because this is the only way to understand your child fully.

Even though Davis chose to be a single mom, she doesn’t rule out the possibility that she will meet a person who will become part of her family. “On the positive side, I don’t have to worry about my relationship, because I don’t have one. But on the other hand, I don’t have support for myself. I remember wishing I had someone to bounce ideas off of.” But so far, she enjoys being a mom, calling the time spent with her daughter and son “her greatest luxury”.
