13 Events and Trends of the 90s-00s That Make Us Want to Sing “Oops, I Did It Again”
What do the 90s and early 2000s remind you of? Capris, reality shows about celebrity newlyweds, or a passionate kiss at a music ceremony? We decided to remind you of the bright events and symbols of that time. Looking at these pictures is like going back in time to our carefree childhood and youth.
1. “Blood” declaration of love between Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thornton.
This amazing actor pairing didn’t shy away from showing their feelings. The future Maleficent and Bad Santa turned up the heat by demonstrating their love in really unconventional ways. The couple decided to carry a piece of each other with them at all times. To do this, they used necklaces into which they smeared a few drops of each other’s blood. It seemed romantic to them at the time, but their marriage didn’t last long. One of Hollywood’s greatest couples divorced in 2003.
2. Jennifer Lopez’s outfits as the symbols of the time.
“Jenny From the Block” perfectly illustrated the fashion of the time. Her white outfit complete with a bandana on the head became particularly canonical, as well as her famous appearance at the 2000 Grammy Awards in a flowing green Versace dress. 20 years later, Lopez proved that she could easily repeat this success and proudly walked the runway in its new interpretation.
3. “Newlyweds” Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey.
Millions of people watched the details of their family lives during the first months of the couple’s reality show Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica. The show started in 2003, one year after the wedding. Getting used to each other and testing the relationship through cleaning, washing, and cooking tasks was not easy for the pair. It was fascinating to watch actual stars go through the same challenges. Unfortunately, no miracle happened. The couple announced their divorce in 2005.
4. “Heavy” blush.
Yes, in the 2000s, we loved applying lots and lots of blush to our cheeks. We did it because the stars did it. The brightest examples were Mariah Carey and Tyra Banks.
5. “The Simple Life” show.
This show is considered the perfect summation of the cultural life of the 2000s, even though many of the show’s events were later revealed to be staged. The adventures of the two blondes, Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton, amazed audiences with their displays of luxury and unconventional approaches to life. Even to this day, passionate fans dissect the show and analyze its most iconic moments. Occasionally, Paris expresses a feeling of nostalgia about those times and posts short clips from the show on her social media. For example, she remembers how she tried to fry bacon on a clothes iron. Despite a break in their communication, Paris and Nicole are still warm friends.
6. The very low waistline.
Another trend that Paris Hilton and Britney Spears made popular was the low waistline. So low, in fact, that even underwear could be seen. Some people still wear such jeans today. The trend of showing the underwear is coming back to fashion.
7. Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston’s marriage.
This couple was considered perfect. Pitt and Aniston started dating in 1998, and got married one year later. They were so emotional that they showed off the engagement ring right at the Sting concert they were attending in 1999. The perfect life didn’t last long, and in 2005, they announced their divorce.
8. Dying locks contrast colors.
The 2000s gave us epic hair coloring ideas, like those of Christina Aguilera, Nicole Richie, and later Avril Lavigne with her hit “Girlfriend.” Girls all over the world asked their hairdressers to create the same pile of platinum hair as their main inspiration: Aguilera, with her contrasting black and pink strands.
9. Trucker hats.
These baseball caps became a fashion trend in the late 90s and early 00s. Everyone wore them: from Ashton Kutcher and Justin Timberlake to it-girls Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie. Stylists have been predicting for years that this headwear will make a comeback in fashion trends, but its triumphant return has not happened yet.
10. Strange belts of all colors.
It is easy to get confused by the variety of belts from the 2000s. Celebrities would regularly use name-brand belts with rhinestones, belts with eyelets, chains, or just pieces of fabric to cinch their low-rise jeans.
11. Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling’s kiss at the MTV Movie Awards.
The actors’ difficult relationship on set didn’t stop them from playing one of the most iconic romantic couples in movie history. Years later, the director shared in an interview that Gosling even asked him to replace the actress. “He’s doing a scene with Rachel and he says, ‘Would you take her out of here and bring in another actress to read off-camera with me?’ I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘I can’t. I can’t do it with her’.” But in 2005, the couple performed such an amazing moment for the cameras that many people still call it the best kiss.
12. Capris.
Leighton Meester was one of the fans of this pant style. She, being a style icon, made them popular. Other celebrities followed her lead, and thus capris ended up in our wardrobes.
13. Crimped hair.
Crimped hair appeared back in the 80s, but its popularity peaked in the 2000s. Stylists don’t even hide the fact they are happy this trend is in the past, because it was really bad for hair.
