Brendan Fraser Went Through a Painful Divorce and Finally Found a Partner Who Supports Him and Makes Him Truly Happy

In the past, Brendan Fraser was one of the most popular Hollywood stars. He fought the villains in The Mummy and survived in the wild in George of the Jungle. But then, Brendan suddenly disappeared from the big screens and made a triumph comeback only a decade later. And he wasn’t alone: he was with a girl that made him happier than ever before. But Brendan had to go through a lot of challenges on his path to happiness.

In 1993, Brendan was an actor that nobody knew, and he was lucky enough to visit Winona Ryder’s party. There, he met new-comer actress Afton Smith, and it was a fateful day. They were in George of the Jungle together, they got married, they went through the peak of Brendan’s career together, and became parents of 3 kids.

But in 2007, they announced their break-up. And then they got divorced, which was a very painful process that deeply affected Brendan for many years.

In their official statement, the couple said they were going to maintain “a close and caring friendship,” but things didn’t go that way. So, in 2009, when the divorce was finalized, the actor had to pay his ex-wife almost $1 million a year. But the problem was that Brendan wasn’t such a well-paid actor anymore. He had health problems, and he wasn’t sure he’d be able to earn enough.

In 2013, the actor tried to decrease the alimony because he wasn’t earning that much anymore, but his ex-wife accused him of fraud. The further settlement negotiations were very difficult for Brendan both financially and morally.

The difficult divorce wasn’t the only problem in Brendan’s life when he was no longer in the spotlight. In 2018, he shared that he had been suffering from physical and emotional pain for years. All the stunts he did in The Mummy resulted in many surgeries and almost 7 years of non-stop treatment. He had to take a break from his acting career because he couldn’t be in hospitals and on movie sets at the same time.

“By the time I did the third Mummy picture, I was put together with tape and ice.”

And the problems only kept coming. At around the same time, he lost his mother. He also had to deal with the dark side of Hollywood, which caused him a lot of shame and anguish for more than 10 years.

“I became depressed. I was blaming myself and I was miserable. Work withered on the vine for me. In my mind, at least, something had been taken away from me.”

But all these years later, Brendan is back, and he feels even better. He played the main role in Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale, which earned him a 6-minute standing ovation during the Venice Film Festival. The actor almost cried, and then he said he was extremely emotional.

«[The Whale] is offering us an opportunity to kind of recognize the virtue and the kind of fundamental decency of Brendan Fraser, who has been really wronged by the industry and has long suffered.»

But the positive turn in his life is not only thanks to this professional recognition. He was also happy because he was with his girlfriend, Gene Moore. They couldn’t stop smiling. And after Venice, Gene surrounded Brendan with her support at the premiere of The Whale in Great Britain, and during the festival in California.

They don’t talk about the details of their personal lives. Gene is a very successful woman. She is an experienced makeup artist and hairdresser who can work anywhere, including film sets and weddings. Gene is even certified and well-trained in Special Effects Make Up, as well as using and disguising prosthetics!

Brendan went through a lot of challenges and now he knows that it’s never too late. You can achieve career success and find true love and happiness at any time and age.
