Christina Aguilera Was Harassed by Her Father and Ridiculed by the Mass Media, but She Found the Strength to Love Herself the Way She Is

Christina Aguilera is a real phenomenon in the music industry. She has been recognized as one of the greatest singers of all time and is even referred to as the Voice of a Generation. She has won a lot of awards and seems powerful and confident. However, it wasn’t always like that. In childhood, Christina had to deal with her abusive father, and later she was severely criticized by the press, but she found the strength to accept herself and her body.

Christina was a little girl when she took her first steps in show business. She won her first talent show at the age of 8, and at 19, she released her debut album and won a Grammy. Music was Christina’s life. With its help, she could distract from the things that frightened her at home.

The girl was terrified of her own father throughout her entire childhood. She watched how he was physically and verbally abusive to her mother. This dominating attitude to women disgusted Christina. She decided that she would never let anyone treat her like this in the future.

And recently, she released a song where she expressed all her emotions about her relationship with her father. She found the strength to forgive him and move forward, but she was not going to forget.

“I made up my mind at a really young age that I had to do for myself. I never wanted a man to tell me what I could and couldn’t do, what I could and couldn’t spend. I always knew I had to be the queen of my castle.”

Christina would become more and more popular. Her every step and every change in her looks attracted a lot of attention from the press and the public. The skinny teenager became a curvy woman, and Christina liked her curves much better. She’s revealed that she can’t look at her teenage photos because she felt so insecure at the time.

But the tabloids had a different opinion about that.

The singer’s weight fluctuations have been criticized throughout her career. She was either called too thin or too big. Christina was really hurt until she learned to ignore this criticism. She finally realized that the only thing that matters is that she feels comfortable with her body.

“I love my body. My boyfriend loooves my body. My son is healthy and happy, so that’s all that matters to me.”

However, the mass media were interested not only in Christina’s looks. She was literally compared to another pop icon — Britney Spears. But if Britney had a reputation for being a good girl, Christina was called “a tart” or even worse. Many people didn’t like that she raised too intimate topics in her songs.

“It’s hard to hear yourself being called names. I remember being hurt by these commercials on MTV, pitting Britney as the good girl and me as the bad girl. It’s like, if I’m going to be demure and innocent, that’s okay. But if I’m going to just be myself, I’m trouble.”

Christina had to face different situations that revealed the other side of the music industry. There were music execs who wouldn’t leave the room when she needed to change her clothes. There were those who called her difficult because she was exhausted and yawned during a meeting and those who discussed other women’s bodies right in front of Christina.

Her childhood trauma led to anxiety and depression. Even today, Christina has to constantly fight for her mental health. Eventually, she’s found her own ways to feel better: she writes a lot and loves to walk outside to look at clouds and trees. Also, Christina does everything possible to make sure that her daughter knows that she’s beautiful the way she is.

Did you know about the struggles the singer had to go through? What do you think about the idea that celebrities should look perfect?
