“Marriage Is Really a Container for a Family.” How Julianne Moore Met the Love of Her Life at 35

It’s not that easy to have a strong family in Hollywood. A busy schedule, shooting in different parts of the world, red carpet events — all these things can ruin a couple’s relationship. However, there are happy celebrity couples who prove love can withstand any difficulties. And Julianne Moore and Bart Freundlich are among these couples.

At CHEERY, we believe that it’s really important to have a healthy and harmonious relationship, so we decided to find out how the love story of the Oscar-winning actress and the talented film director began.

In 1996, 35-year-old Julianne Moore landed the lead role in the movie The Myth of Fingerprints which the scriptwriter and director were 26-year-old, Bart Freundlich. They hit it off on set, but Julianne couldn’t even imagine that they would become a family, “When I read the script for The Myth of Fingerprints, I met Bart Freundlich. I loved it, and I loved his story. But I never, ever, ever in my life imagined that making that movie would give me the personal life that I always dreamed of,” Moore said.

Freundlich recalls that during the filming he suddenly felt the need to protect Julianne from all the hardships of the world. Once Bart noticed that she was standing outside in the windy weather without a coat. He didn’t want to put his arm around her because they didn’t know each other so well, so he just came up to her and stood with his back to the wind.

According to Freundlich, this was the moment when they connected, “We connected at that moment on an unspoken level, where she knew I saw that flame in her, and understood it, and was willing not to suffocate it but to protect it.

In December 1997, they had their first child, Caleb, and in April 2002, they welcomed their daughter Liv. The actress confessed that she wasn’t thinking about marrying Bart, but she changed her mind under the influence of her children and her therapist, “I had a therapist who said marriage is really a container for a family, and that made sense to me.”

Julianne and Bart tied the knot in August 2003. At the time, Moor was 42, and Bart was 33. They had a small wedding ceremony: Julianne wore a lilac dress instead of a classic white gown, and Bart donned a cream-colored suit with a tie to match Julianne’s dress. There were 36 guests present at the wedding which took place in their West Side Manhattan home.

The celebrity couple has been together for 26 years. Julianne is often asked what the secret of a happy marriage is, and she says that the key to a strong family is laughing, “I think if you’re both invested in it working out, then you have to have a good time. My God, I think they have to make you laugh. If they don’t make you laugh, it’s just deadly.”

And judging by the photos, Moore posts on her Instagram, Bart definitely knows how to make his wife laugh.

Their son, Caleb Freundlich, is 24 now. He earned a Masters in Music and Screen Scoring at New York University. 20-year-old Liv is also a university student, she plans to finish her studies in 2024. Liv takes part in advertising campaigns alongside her mother and works as a model.

Julianne Moore is very proud of her family, “We have a very solid family life and it is the most satisfying thing I have ever done.” The actress says that her family is the main priority in her life, so they try to spend as much time together as possible. According to Moore, the most important thing a parent can do for their child is to be by their side.
