Snoop Dogg and Shante Broadus Attended School Prom Together 30 Years Ago, and Now They Are Happy Grandparents of 5

Snoop Dogg and Shante Taylor Broadus have been together for more than 30 years, and during 25 of them, they’ve been married. This marriage is one of the most long-lasting in show business. And even though they’ve had their ups and downs, they love each other with all their hearts and already have 5 grandchildren.

Snoop and Shante met when they studied at Long Beach Polytechnic High School. However, at the time, Snoop was known by the name Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. The future spouses first met at a high school football game, and he asked for her phone number. But she gave it to him only when they met for the second time, and he had to beg for it.

The rapper recalls that he had to court Shante for a long time by sending her love letters and calling her on the phone. According to Snoop, they kissed for the first time only after 4 months of dating. He became close with Shante’s mother, and it so happened that he talked to her on the phone more often than to his girlfriend.

Shante Broadus said, “I would come home, and he would be at my house talking to my mom! They became really close, and now we’re married with children. That’s how it all started.”

Snoop’s talent revealed itself when he was still at school. He played football and rapped at parties. And Shante supported her future husband, “Even before he came out as a musician, our friends and I were his fans. We would always listen to his songs and give our opinions.”

Shante was always by his side at the beginning of his career, trying to carry out the responsibilities of his manager and adjust to his growing popularity. But this sometimes wasn’t so easy to do.

There was a difficult period in their relationship when everyone in his inner circle encouraged him to dump Shante. Everyone but rapper Tupac Shakur. Snoop decided to follow his friend’s advice which turned out to be one of the most valuable in his life.

The couple tied the knot in June 1997. By that time, they had already had 2 sons, Cordé — born in August 1994 — and Cordell — born in February 1997. But suddenly it turned out that Snoop had a secret.

When still in school, Snoop had a romantic relationship with another girl, Laurie Holmond. After graduation, they continued to date, resulting in their mutual son, Julian. But the rapper didn’t abandon them, he recognized his son and paid their bills.

Shante forgave her husband’s infidelity and didn’t file for divorce. And in June 1999, the couple had a daughter, Cori. So, Snoop Dogg became a father of 3 sons and a daughter.

Unfortunately, there were other crises in the couple’s relationship. Snoop and Shante’s marriage almost fell apart in 2004. Due to the pressures of fame and constant touring, their relationship started drifting apart, and the rapper filed for divorce on the grounds of irreconcilable differences. But there was still hope in the love story of this couple.

In 2005, the spouses faced a tragedy. A light spot appeared on the face of their 6-year-old daughter, Cori. And a few weeks later, she started losing weight and her hair was falling out. For a long time, no one could offer a diagnosis for the girl. Snoop Dogg could barely fight back tears when he was telling about his daughter saying to him that her brain hurt. He felt so helpless.

The girl’s condition worsened. Finally, the doctors told Snoop and Shante that their daughter had either cancer or lupus. This news shocked them. “You always think it’s going to happen to someone else. Some days in the studio, I’d just cry,” Snoop Dogg said. A few days later, the diagnosis of lupus was confirmed.

It took months to get the disease under control, and eventually, Cori started feeling better. This tragic experience made the couple only stronger. In an interview, Shante and Snoop said, “It’s amazing how this all turned out. We were going to get a divorce. But we wouldn’t have gotten through it. That’s what it boiled down to. Cori’s lupus showed us we need to be together forever.”

The musician said that when he returned home, he fell in love with his wife and children again. “This music industry is a mother, man, and it’ll take your vision and blur it. But God is good, so I understand that I need my wife and my kids in my life — so I threw the papers away. I don’t want to get a divorce.”

And Shante revealed that Snoop apologized to the kids and shared what he felt like. Even though that period was painful to Shante, she is sure that forgiveness was the thing that helped to rekindle their relationship because she couldn’t imagine marrying anyone else or loving another person as strongly as she loved Snoop.

In June 2008, the couple renewed their wedding vows in front of 200 of their closest friends and family.

Their 25th anniversary

It seemed that all their difficulties had been left behind and their family life had gone back to normal — Snoop Dogg recorded and released his songs and Shante helped him. But suddenly in 2018, Instagram model Celina Powell revealed that she’d had an affair with the rapper. She also shared screenshots of texts and videos he had sent her.

Surprisingly, Snoop reacted to this with jokes, and Shante shared a photo of her wedding ring on Instagram, making it evident that she wasn’t worried about Celina’s claims. Later, Powell confessed that she’d been bored and wanted to “say something outrageous.”

In an interview, the rapper revealed that he felt sorry for the mistakes he had made during his relationship with Shante, “I had no understanding of what I was doing to her, how I was hurting her, and how I was betraying myself. I was betraying myself until I became a man and realized I need to love this woman who loves me and had my kids. I needed to put my life in perspective and let my music and my business become secondary.”

They say there is a great woman behind every great man. And for Snoop Dogg, this woman is Shante Broadus. In 2021, the rap star revealed that his wife was now managing his career, which was very important to him. The rapper said, “That’s my backbone, that’s my heart and my soul, that’s the one that I love the most, that I trust the most.”
