10+ Actors Who Stopped Appearing in Films, And Now We Miss Them Greatly
Retirement, a well-deserved break from many years of work, is perceived differently by everyone. Some are excited to finally have time for their favourite hobbies, while others find themselves at a loss without their work routine. Celebrities are no exception. As sad as it may be for us, actors and actresses at the height of their fame bravely take time out of work, and sometimes end their careers entirely to pursue a different passion.
Here at CHEERY, we’re sure they’ll be successful in whatever they put their mind to, whether it’s their passion for creativity, business, or simply a respite from fame, spotlights and cameras. But as a bonus, we’ve included a story of a star who has changed her mind about retiring and is preparing to dazzle us with a new role.
1. Bruce Willis
The family of the one-and-only “Die Hard” actor has announced his retirement from cinema in 2022 due to health concerns. It’s worth noting, that by the end of his career, spanning over forty years, he had become one of the highest grossing actors of all time: the total revenue of all the films he’s appeared in has exceeded $5 billion.
2. Jim Carrey
In a recent interview, the actor admitted that he was tired of work and now intends to pursue a quiet, spiritual life. Cary intends to devote more and more time to painting, and only return to the world of cinema if he is brought “some sort of script that’s written in gold ink”.
3. Amanda Bynes
The actress rose to fame as a child star thanks to her role in the TV series “The Amanda Show”. Amanda left Hollywood in 2011 on the heels of her success in “She’s a Man” and “Easy A”, choosing to focus more on her health.
4. The Olsen Twins
The famous Olsen twins bid farewell to cinema in 2012. Having starred in more than 20 films, the girls decided to try their hand in the fashion industry and it didn’t go amiss. The sisters launched their own clothing line and became recognised style icons.
5. Freddie Prinze Jr.
The star of “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and “She’s All That” abruptly changed his career to writing wrestling shows in 2008. And most recently, in 2022, he announced the launch of his own wrestling company.
6. Danny Lloyd
Danny rose to fame one morning after a striking role as the main character’s son in one of the creepiest thrillers of all time, “The Shining”. And even though the young actor played a worthy pairing with such a behemoth as Jack Nicholson, as a teenager he decided to leave the world of cinema and go into science. He is now a biology professor and father of four.
It wasn’t until 2019 that Lloyd delighted horror fans once again with his cameo role in “Doctor Sleep”.
7. Portia de Rossi
The “Scandal” and “Ally McBeal” star revealed in an interview that she decided to leave her career at 45 years of age because she wanted to do something different and challenging. As an avid art collector, she founded her innovative art company.
8. Sandra Bullock
In March 2022, the actress announced an indefinite hiatus from filming. “Miss Congeniality” has prioritised her family and children, with whom she intends to spend all her free time. Let’s not forget that Sandra is a happy mother of two adopted children, 10 and 12 years old. In August 2022, her latest work to date will be released — the film “Bullet Train”.
9. Daniel Day-Lewis
Having reached the pinnacle of cinema, Daniel announced his retirement from film in 2017. During his career, the actor won the Oscar three times. Only Jack Nicholson and Walter Brennan have achieved the same success, scooping up three coveted statuettes each. It’s worth noting that Daniel wasn’t planning to leave the world of cinema until he took up a role in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “The Phantom Thread”.
10. Meg Ryan
In 2019 the actress admitted that she has decided to leave cinema due to burnout: “I didn’t feel like I knew enough anymore about myself or the world to reflect it as an actor. I felt isolated”.
Bonus story: Cameron Diaz
In an interview, the actress admitted that by the time she was 40, she realised it was time for her to retire from acting and pursue other things. Having dedicated 25 years to cinema, Diaz stated that she no longer intends to return to the big roles. In recent years, the former actress has published books about healthy living and actively invested in start-ups with similar goals. Diaz’s last film was released in 2014, but this hiatus is set to be broken soon, as Jamie Foxx has announced that he is preparing to star alongside Cameron in a new action comedy in 2022.
