14 Times Celebrities Included a Meaningful Message in Their Outfits, and We Deciphered It

Stars often prepare for important public events for months because they open a window of opportunity for them to connect and communicate with the public. Some celebs want to look impeccable and highlight their appearance, and others promote clothes and jewelry brands. But there are some stars that hide certain messages in their outfits and want to achieve other goals, such as paying tribute to someone or speaking out about an important topic.

Kate Middleton

In April 2022, the Princess of Wales visited the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. Kate Middleton wore a cream outfit with a skirt that had pineapples on it.

They were there because pineapples are a symbol of people fighting infertility. There’s a belief, currently with no scientific evidence, that eating a pineapple on the day of your embryo transfer can help you get pregnant. So, Kate showed her support for people who are struggling to conceive.

The tennis player wore an outfit for her last tournament that was very symbolic. The bejeweled bodice was constructed to recreate the night sky the match took place underneath; the six-layered flippy skirt represented Serena’s six previous wins at the tournament; her diamond-encrusted Nike swooshes on her trainers incorporated the words “mama” and “queen.”

Anya Taylor-Joy

In the 2021 Venice Film Festival, one of the brightest outfits was Anya Taylor-Joy’s pink dress. For some people, the outfit reminded them of Barbie. But according to the actress’ stylist, the dress was a tribute to the leading ladies of Old Hollywood.

For the 2022 Met Gala, the American blogger and influencer chose a Louis Vuitton dress. Its upper part was styled after the shirtwaists that working women wore at the end of the 19th century.

Gwen Stefani

In 2021, Gwen Stefani married singer Blake Shelton. Her wedding look was gorgeous, but it also had a moving message encrypted in it. Gwen’s veil had the names of herself, her future husband, and their children — Kingston, Zuma, and Apollo — embroidered in it.

Tommy Dorfman

This American trans actress, known for playing Ryan in 13 Reasons Why, decided to talk about an important subject for her. Dorfman’s dress was accompanied by a clutch that said “Protect trans kids.”

Michelle Yeoh

During the 2019 Golden Globes, the actress wore a ring her character wore in Crazy Rich Asians. The ring belongs to Yeoh; she suggested using it when the movie creators didn’t know what jewelry to add to the character’s look.

When she found out the film was nominated for the award, she decided to wear this ring to the ceremony as a tribute to the film and its historical importance.

Issa Rae

In 2018, the star was the first person of color to wing the CFDA Fashion Awards. Rae’s clothes highlighted the importance of this event. All her outfits were made by black designers.

The star explained, “It was a subtle reminder that we can do anything and go anywhere. We are not just tragic figures.”

Jennifer Nettles

Unlike many of the examples in this article, this message the singer put in her clothes for the 2019 Country Music Awards was not very hidden. Nettles wore a white suit with a cape that called for more women on country radio.

Aunjanue Ellis

During the 94th Oscars ceremony, the actress used her dress to honor her mother. On the shoulder of the red Versace dress, you can see “Jax baby.” Ellis explained, “Her name is Jacqueline, and I’m Jax’s baby.” The star said it was really important to her for her mom to be with her on that important day.

Elizabeth Taylor

During the 1992 Oscars, the actress wore a beautiful white dress with a red ribbon on it — a symbol of fighting against AIDS. Taylor wanted to remind people about the importance of being informed about this illness.

Evan Rachel Wood

During the Golden Globes, the actress wore an elegant tuxedo she chose for a reason. Wood said, “I’m not trying to protest dresses, but I wanted to make sure young girls and women know that it’s not a requirement. You don’t have to wear one if you don’t want to. Just be yourself because you’re worth more than that.”

It also served as a tribute to Marlene Dietrich and David Bowie.

Billie Eilish

The outfit of the singer at the 2019 AMA attracted a lot of attention. Eilish wore a T-shirt saying “No Music on a Dead Planet.” It’s the slogan of Music Declares Emergency — a community of musicians who are concerned with climate change.

Catherine O’Hara

In 2019, the actress was invited to announce a music performance from the Beetlejuice musical at the Tony Awards. O’Hara decided to pay tribute to the original Tim Burton movie and chose a dress that resembled the black and white suit of the main character. In the 1988 comedy, she played one of the main roles.

Do you have any things in your wardrobe that symbolize something or have a hidden meaning?
