“I’ve Never Been in Love Like This.” How Adele Went Through a Divorce and Managed to Open Her Heart for New Love
A 15-time Grammy winner, an Oscar winner for Best Song, and also a record holder of The Billboard Music Awards for winning 12 awards in one night — all these titles belong to Adele. The British singer achieved success with lightning speed in 2009. Once, Adele confessed that breaking up with her boyfriend and the negative emotions it caused helped her channel her creativity.

Adele’s first studio album 19 corresponds to the singer’s age when she was creating it. It was a tremendous success. When talking about her breakthrough, the singer confessed that she put part of her soul into it. “If I’d been sober, I probably wouldn’t have written ANY of it!” she said in an interview.
The fact is that she managed to complete this album thanks to splitting up with her boyfriend. History has it that she wrote the lyrics for the song Chasing Pavements which entered all charts after she broke up with her boyfriend who cheated on her.
The future star was walking down the street thinking, “What is it you’re chasing? You’re chasing an empty pavement.” This was how the song was born. She first recorded it on her mobile phone and then arranged the chords when she got home. As a result, her entire album was full of sadness and bitter memories.

The year 2009 became pivotal for Adele. The young singer won 2 Grammy Awards as Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, made her first world tour called An Evening with Adele, and enjoyed the success of her debut album which sold 2.2 million copies worldwide.
But as soon as Adele became famous, her ex-boyfriend showed up and demanded his part of the singer’s profits because, according to him, Adele owed him part of her success. “I’ll give him this credit — he made me an adult and put me on the road that I’m traveling,” the star said.

But Adele wasn’t alone for long. In the late 2000s, the singer was already in a relationship with a mysterious stranger who was behind some of her hit songs. Adele’s third album won an unbelievable number of awards including 2 Grammys for Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album. But when the singer gave her speech on stage, she not only thanked her friends and family for supporting her, but also spoke about becoming a mother and the struggles that go along with that. She said, “And in my pregnancy and becoming a mother I lost a lot of myself and I’ve struggled and I still do struggle being a mum. It’s really hard.”
“Learning to REALLY truly love yourself”
In April 2019, the singer wrote on her Instagram that she was starting a new stage in her life and made a promise to herself, “Learning to REALLY truly love yourself.” That year, her fans also found out about her divorce.
When talking about the reason for their split, Adele said that it was the pursuit of her own happiness which she didn’t find in marriage. By the way, the divorce process affected her mental health because their problems made their child, Angelo, really unhappy.
Adele had to attend therapy to heal her emotional wounds, and during this process, she also worked on her childhood trauma.

Thanks to therapy, the singer realized that all her previous relationships were toxic and prevented her from actually finding any happiness. Therapy taught Adele how to love herself and open her heart to a new relationship. In September 2021, the singer told her fans that she had a new boyfriend, sports agent Rich Paul, who is smart, good-looking, and very funny.
In the famous interview with Oprah Winfrey, Adele opened up that it was the first relationship in her life in which she truly loved herself and was open to loving and being loved by someone else.
The singer doesn’t try to hide her emotions and happiness, and says that she’s never been in love like this. She’s just obsessed with Rich.
The couple spends a lot of time together, attending different sports events and thinking about their future. When asked if she wanted to get married, Adele would reply she was still single but was open to a new marriage.
