How Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick Went Through Infertility and Surrogacy, and Have Been Happy Together for 30 Years

In 1991, Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick didn’t think about fame or money: both of them worked on Broadway and just wanted to become good actors. The future, universally loved Carry from Sex and the City was going through a breakup with Robert Downey Jr. That relationship lasted 7 years, was explosive, and very public. And when she met Matthew, it was such a nice change.
By the way, Matthew recently said that when he first met Sarah, he knew he would connect his entire life with her, “The first time I met her, I thought ’That’s it.’”
They got officially married in May 1997. They had a surprise wedding for all the 100 guests that were convinced they were going to a regular party. And only when they arrived, they realized it was a wedding. The bride was wearing a stylish white dress, and later said she didn’t even take a long time to choose it: she just visited a store she liked.
In 2002, Sarah had a son, James Wilkie. And, as she said, it changed her life. The actress that many people know as an eccentric journalist, that never wanted to have kids, was someone who loved motherhood.
Sarah’s first pregnancy was so simple that they didn’t think they would have trouble conceiving the second baby. She later told about this in an interview, “We tried and tried and tried and tried to get pregnant; it just wasn’t to be.” They even considered IVF, but her age made it impossible. But they didn’t give up: they used the help of a surrogate mother and became happy parents of charming twins.
Sarah and Matthew think that the most important thing in raising kids is communicating as a family. Both parents love their jobs, and they can’t always be there, even if they want. So, talking helps them to feel close. The actress once said, “I’m proud that our children talk to us in the way they do. I’m glad they’re curious people.” And Sarah loves telling in public how much she adores her kids.
Talking to each other also helps them maintain a good relationship. Matthew honestly said that a lot of silence is “definitely not a good idea”, and that he and his wife are true friends.
