12 Hidden Messages in Movie Costumes We Hadn’t Noticed Before

When we first watch a movie or a series, we usually pay attention to the plot. But, if we decide to rewatch something, we might notice that the creators left a lot of hidden references and hints. There are lots of things of the sort in characters’ costumes — they can tell us who the characters are related to, or how their temper has changed.

Black Widow

The most attentive viewers might have noticed an arrow-shaped pendant on Natasha’s neck. It’s in memory of Clint Barton, Hawkeye, with whom she had a good relationship.

The Handmaid’s Tale

The handmaids only wear slim-fitted red dresses. They are designed to make the belt and the corset highlight the growing belly during pregnancy.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

You might have noticed that, during the party at the Capitol, Peeta had 3 painted nails: index, middle, and ring. These are the fingers people use to give the Mockingjay salute.

Spider-Man: No Way Home

When Peter Parker visits Doctor Strange, he notices that the doctor is wearing a Columbia University hoodie. In the comics, Strange spent his student years at this university.

Enchanted

At the end of the film, evil Queen Narissa turns into a dragon. And her costume is a hint of this transformation. Susan Sarandon wore a corset and a reptile leather skirt with a cape fashioned to look like wings. And during the transformation, the skirt’s layers are wrapped around like a tail, and the crown is transformed into horns.

Game of Thrones

The fans of the series once noticed that Sansa started to adopt the style of Cersei after arriving at King’s Landing. And Sophie Turner, who portrayed Sansa, doesn’t deny it. She says that the character wanted to learn from other women and copied them. So, her hair and clothes first look like Cersei’s, then like Margaery Tyrell’s, and later like Daenerys’.

The Witcher

Villentretenmerth, known as Borch Three Jackdaws, was in fact a golden dragon that Geralt and the others were looking for. Just look at his costume — it looks as if it was made from thick scales. His bodyguards, Tea and Vea, chose the same clothes.

Crimson Peak

Mysterious Thomas Sharpe wears dark green and black clothes — the same colors as the stairs and walls in his estate. Also, his clothes were designed to look old, just like his house. Besides, Thomas, despite being young, is a tired man — attractive on the outside but burned out on the inside.

Star Wars: Episode VIII — The Last Jedi

The fans of the franchise probably liked that the costume designers dressed Finn in the same jacket he wore in The Force Awakens. He fought against Kylo and got injured. And in the next film, he wears the same jacket, but it’s patched — right on the same spot.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon

In the second film about vampires, you can see a giant mark of a wolf’s paw on Jason’s T-shirt. Maybe, the creators were trying to tell us that he would be a werewolf soon.

Home Alone 2: Lost in New York

Here’s another example of great attention to detail in movies. In the first film, Kevin wears a beige jacket with a black and red patch on the back. And in the second film, his cousin Fuller is wearing the same jacket. Obviously, Kevin is too big for it, so his younger relative inherited it.

The Undoing

Psychotherapist Grace Fraser, played by Nicole Kidman, loves extravagant coats, and she’s not afraid of the attention they attract. But when she finds herself in the middle of a very unpleasant trial, she tries to blend in with the crowd and starts wearing simple black and gray clothes.

Have you ever found any interesting details in characters’ clothes?
