17 Movie Roles That Left the Audience Really Disappointed

Film production is like a lottery. You never know whether the movie will become a hit or a box office bomb. Even A-listers in the cast can’t guarantee the success of the movie because almost every movie star may fail to portray their character. We’ve decided to find movie parts in which some famous actors were really unconvincing.

Dakota Johnson, Persuasion

Despite the fact that Dakota Johnson is coming from an acting family and obviously a talented actress, Hollywood is still not ready to embrace her. Even though she starred in the very famous trilogy and can’t complain about the lack of work, she still can’t find a role that will leave the audience totally happy.

Recently, Netflix released a new screen adaptation of Persuasion. Critics and the audience called the movie a disaster and a pale copy of Bridgerton. The actress also got her portion of criticism. In movie reviews, the audience wrote that the character was poorly played by Dakota Johnson. They were also not happy with the fact that the British character was portrayed by an American actress, and “her accent was rubbish.

Harry Styles, My Policeman

Even before My Policeman entered theaters, the movie managed to get a lot of bad reviews. Those who watched it at the Toronto International Film Festival were unhappy with both the script and acting. The movie stars Harry Styles who started appearing in movies in; 2017. However, his acting experience hasn’t been really successful so far. In a review, it was mentioned that “he is a terrible actor and any movie he stars in will be ruined by his presence.”

Kate Beckinsale, Jolt

The comedy Jolt ranked seventh among the worst movies of 2021. When the production started, the audience had high hopes about it because the starring role was given to Hollywood’s favorite — Kate Beckinsale. However, it turned out that even her presence can’t guarantee success. “Her talent is wasted in this action role,” one of the viewers wrote. The movie was also called extremely predictable, and therefore boring.

Kevin Hart, The Man from Toronto

The recent Netflix movie The Man from Toronto received bad reviews from both viewers and critics. They mentioned that even though the general idea was good and the cast included famous actors, the movie just didn’t work out. One of the reviewers noted that Hart “has created this ‘actor’ persona which does the same thing in every movie: talking non-stop in a whiny voice and pointing the obvious like it would be amusing.”

Pierce Brosnan, The King’s Daughter

The earliest development for the movie based on the novel The Moon and the Sun, written by Vonda N. McIntyre, began in 1999. However, due to bureaucratic problems, production was shelved for 15 years. In 2014, principal photography began on location at the Palace of Versailles. Even though filming was wrapped up that same year, the release date was postponed indefinitely.

Eventually, the movie starring Pierce Brosnan entered theaters in early 2022. But according to critics, the movie turned out to be “a royal disappointment.” Viewers also mentioned that the movie is a “chaotic and just plain kooky mess.” Brosnan was also criticized for wearing an awkward wig and not even trying to speak with a French accent.

Megan Fox, Big Gold Brick

Megan Fox’s fans called Big Gold Brick the worst movie in her filmography. After the movie was released, some viewers even wondered whether the actress was able to act. However, it’s worth mentioning that Megan’s co-stars also got their portion of criticism. Andy Garcia, Oscar Isaac, and Lucy Hale were among them. The movie received very low scores and was called a meretricious, unfunny, strained, and ultimately trite black comedy.

Jake Gyllenhaal, Ambulance

Even Jake Gyllenhaal, who is multiple nominees for Golden Globe and Academy Awards, can be unconvincing in his role. This is what happened with his movie Ambulance. The movie barely managed to cover the budget spent on production.

The acting was called unconvincing and “over-the-top.” The main question that the audience still continues to ask is “Why would the talented Jake Gyllenhaal want to be in this mess of a movie?”

Johnny Depp, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore

Mads Mikkelsen was probably very nervous when he took over the role of Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore because the audience doesn’t really like when film directors replace actors, especially when the actor to be replaced is Johnny Depp. But everything turned out to be the other way around. When the latest movie of the Fantastic Beasts franchise was released, it was Depp who had to be nervous because critics concluded, “Mads Mikkelsen’s Grindelwald is an upgrade from Johnny Depp’s.

Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman, Thor: Love and Thunder

This movie became a disaster for 2 movie stars at once. Who could have thought this could happen? Usually, movies produced by Marvel Studios are very commercially successful. However, this movie was not that popular. The audience called it a crushing disappointment. And even though Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman had charisma and chemistry, they didn’t look like people in love.

Daniel Kaluuya, Nope

Looking at the main character of Jordan Peele’s new movie Nope, the audience was confused — where was the charisma, energy, and strength which Daniel Kaluuya’s characters are known for? The Oscar-winning actor looked like a “dullard” here. However, it might be what the movie director wanted from him. But it was Daniel who was criticized the most. In the reviews for Nope, the flick was called potentially the worst movie of 2022.

Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum, The Lost City

Even though the movie The Lost City was seriously criticized, no one doubted Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum’s acting talent. The audience concluded that the movie just wasn’t right for them. In the reviews, they wrote that “the screenplay was embarrassingly bad, and it brought out all of Bullock’s and Tatum’s worst tendencies.” As a result, the movie turned out to be stupid and cringy, and the only good thing about it was Brad Pitt’s appearance on screen.

Tom Holland, Uncharted

No matter how hard the Uncharted creators tried to make another Indiana Jones out of it, they got only a pale copy. Indiana Jones fans noticed many references to this iconic saga, but they didn’t help Uncharted become a good movie.

As for Tom Holland who played the starring role, the audience noted his natural charm. But this was the main problem. According to critics, the actor played “a very Holland-like character — charismatic, boyishly charming, a bit daffy, and with an unshakable innocence,” but this wasn’t enough to become a bold treasure hunter.

Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder, Destination Wedding

What can go wrong if a renowned film director decides to make a romantic comedy starring world-famous actors? However, Destination Wedding wasn’t liked by both critics and the audience. They called the movie “torture”. According to them, the story was totally unfunny, and the acting was irritating.

Kristen Stewart, Crimes of the Future

Kristen Stewart’s acting career is full of experiments: she can play in a teenage saga or star in independent movies. So, it’s no wonder that her work gets contrasting reviews. In 2021, she portrayed Lady Di in the movie Spencer and was even nominated for the Academy Award for her performance. And in 2022, she played in David Cronenberg’s controversial movie Crimes of the Future.

The movie rating is quite low, it hasn’t even reached 6 out of 10. In a review, it was mentioned that her dialogue is stilted and clunky, and incomprehensible.

Kristin Davis, Deadly Illusions

It’s not quite easy to become the worst movie of the year. But the screenwriter and director Anna Elizabeth James managed to do that. Her picture Deadly Illusions ranked 1 in the list of the worst movies of 2021. And this happened despite the fact that the main parts were given to Dermot Mulroney and Kristin Davis.

It’s worth mentioning that Davis who was the central figure of the story had to get all the blame. The audience mentioned that it seemed like the actress was “just going through the motions, knowing that she could do better, but not really willing to put forth the effort.”
