17 Times a Film’s Makeup and Hairstyles Provoked a Lot of Questions

A film is a result of the work of a huge crew. Many of the people behind the scenes of a film are overshadowed by the actors, writers, and directors, and their contributions might seem minor. Well, we don’t notice their work either as long as they do it well, but once they make a mistake, it’s extremely noticeable and impacts the overall impression of the film.

The Hunger Games (2012)

In the first film of the popular franchise, the main character had to fight for her life in a forest, but this didn’t impact the look on her face. For most parts of the film, she had a perfect-looking face and eye makeup. Even her lips looked great while she was in desperate need of some water.

Titanic (1997)

Even though Rose looked charming and the film’s makeup artists highlighted Kate Winslet’s facial features, women of her class didn’t don such bright makeup at this time, and suffragettes would wear red lipstick only in protest.

Game of Thrones (2011–2019)

Even though the story is set in a fantasy world, everything looks very real. But the show is set in the Middle Ages (or at least it alludes to that time), and most of the characters still have perfectly white teeth.

Bird Box (2018)

Throughout the entire film, Sandra Bullock’s character wears simple makeup with mascara and eyeliner. But she had to wear a blindfold each time she left the house.

Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

The makeup artists tried to make the character of Charlize Theron look tired, but the wives of the tyrant always had perfect makeup with great lips, eyebrows, and moisturized skin, even though they were in the middle of the desert with very little water.

White Chicks (2004)

In the film, black FBI agents turned into white girls because they had to do a job. But let’s face it: It’s hard to mistake them for girls — they don’t even look like people.

2012 (2009)

Even though the apocalypse was coming, the lead character, Kate, always had time to fix her makeup.

Dallas Buyers Club (2013)

To portray the role of Ron Woodroof, Matthew McConaughey had to lose about 47 lb. So it’s obvious that the actor was really serious about his work, but the makeup artists made some mistakes. Even though Ron was slowly dying because of his illness, his teeth remain perfectly white with no stains, no gum issues, etc.

K.C. Undercover (2015–2018)

The series is about a girl that wanted to become a spy like her parents. In one of the scenes where she was undercover and looked like a guy, she takes off her wig, and in the next moment, she has perfect makeup — even though she had facial hair and a fake chin just seconds before.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)

After a fierce fight, Black Widow somehow managed to keep her perfect makeup.

Burlesque (2010)

Cher’s character made just a few sweeps on Christina Aguilera’s face and somehow gave her perfect, super-professional makeup.

Mrs. Doubtfire (1993)

Even though the entire story revolves around the physical transformation of the main character, it’s still hard to believe that not a single character noticed that something was wrong with the old lady. So much makeup, an unrealistic nose and wrinkles, and the young eyes of Robin Williams would definitely be hard to miss in real life.

The 100 (2014–2020)

After the civilization survived 2 apocalypses, the main character wakes up from the cryogenic sleep with perfect eye makeup. Where did she get the mascara in these circumstances?

Joker (2019)

The scene in which the Joker dyes his brown hair green without bleaching it first looks rather weird. In reality, there was no way he could have created such a vibrant color doing it this way.

The Princess Diaries (2001)

In the movie, Paolo, a hairstylist, tried to force a brush through Mia’s dry, curly hair. This looks not only painful but rather unprofessional.

How I Met Your Mother (2005–2014)

In one of the episodes, Robin says that she wasn’t wearing makeup at the moment, and Barney was stunned by her natural beauty. But the makeup on the actress is actually quite visible, especially on the eyes.

Thor (2011) and The Avengers (2012)

For the first film about Thor, actor Chris Hemsworth had to lighten his eyebrows, which looked quite ridiculous. In one of the interviews, the head of Marvel Studios said, “Because we were like, Thor is blonde! He has to be blonde! And Hemsworth was great and awesome and pulled it off, but there are a couple of shots I watch and I’m like, ’Oh my God, that poor guy, we made him freaking dye his eyebrows! That’s ridiculous!’” But the worst part was that in the next film, his eyebrows got darker.
